(1) The first step is properly configuring your game and computer for optimum performance and reliability.
This will not immediately help you aim better but it makes it easier to aim — reducing FPS lag and using the recommended settings.

Here's the link to my settings. (Recommended Settings)

(2) The second step is learning about halo's shooting system.

Always remember: HALO IS NOT HITSCAN.

Range, biped velocity (player model velocity), projectile velocity (rate of fire), distance, latency and strafe all affect your aim both adversely and congenially.

When you fire a round from any weapon there's an initial velocity. The time that round takes to get from your gun's muzzle to a biped divided by the distance is — velocity.

Velocity (projectile velocity) - (Distance/Time) is a variable that changes constantly from weapon to weapon.

Here’s a proper list to show the amount of rounds fired per minute by each weapon that is important (I have also listed the damage and ammo type as well):

M6D Pistol
Ammo Type: 12.7mmx40 (M225 semi-armor piercing, high-explosive)
Damage: 25
Rate of Fire: 210 rpm

MA5B ICWS Assault Rifle
Ammo Type: 7.62mmx51 (M118 armor-piercing, full metal jacket)
Damage: 10
Rate of Fire: 900 rpm

SRS99C-S2 AM Sniper Rifle
Ammo Type: 14.5mmx114 (armor-piercing, fin-stabilized, discarding sabot)
Damage: 101
Rate of Fire: 120 rpm

M90 Mk.I Shotgun
Ammo Type: 8-gauge, 3.5-inch (magnum buckshot)
Damage: 8x15 (120) to 18x15 (270) to 25x15 (375)
Rate of Fire: 60 rpm

Plasma Rifle
Ammo Type: Superheated Plasma
Damage: 10 to 12 to 14
Rate of Fire: 420 to 700 rpm

With the increase of the rate of fire, there’s an increase in projectile velocity.
That velocity will decrease with distance and increase with range.

Why is this important? – You have to place the crosshair in the opposite direction in which the enemy’s biped is moving… The further the distance, the further the crosshair must be placed from the enemy’s biped. Once the RPM for that weapon increases you'll have to place the crosshair a bit closer to the player model. In short range the crosshair distance from player model has to be increased.
Latency is another factor that you must compensate for. You will have to place your crosshair further away from the biped as latency increases.

Conclusion – By compensating for latency, distance and the projectile velocity of your weapon, you’ll be able to consistently land shots in the right place.

Best Regards

Yup, that's pretty much the an in depth explanation.
Always remember that aiming is about knowing where to aim at what time.
With the knowledge of the physics that I explained, you'll gain consistency once you practice.
With practice you'll be able to apply what you've learnt.
Get in the servers and play with various latencies.
Try playing on maps of different sizes.
My daily routine for a day was 15 minutes on BloodGulch and 20 minutes in Ratrace and Chillout.

Goodluck, and don't forget to have fun!

I disable all graphics so as to increase my FPS.
There is an exception to this, you can use high settings if you have a good PC.
Always turn particles off, they are useless.
From time to time, I use decals and medium textures. The game looks better but for scrims I'd sacrifice quality in order to get optimum performance.

Holy smokes indeed! That's a ton of content, important content. Separating noobs from professionals. I saw your posts on your team btw! I didn't need to post! You already helped peeps with Spawns and configuration. As a noob ... I 2 say, this has helped tremendously and your contribution is iimmense. Though there's a few people who post on halo's forum, I'm sure people have recognized this post and agree with me.

Well done!
